Announcing a webinar on Responsible Data policies: Weds 19th April

Zara Rahman

Join The Engine Room and Oxfam for a webinar on Wednesday 19th April at 9am EST/2pm GMT to hear about how their Responsible Data policy has been put into practice. If you’re also working on a responsible data policy and/or have experience in this topic and want to share it during the webinar, let us know!

Over the past few months, we’ve been carrying out research with Oxfam to understand how their Responsible Data policy has been put into practice since its launch almost 2 years ago. At the same time, it’s been fantastic to see other organisations like USAID, the Catholic Relief Services and Africa’s Voices hard at work developing responsible data policies rooted in their organisational values and work, and we believe we could all learn a lot from each other’s work.

The work in this area from all these organisations and more has been strengthened by the vibrant community thinking about and working on responsible data topics – from working out trade-offs that need to be made, to sharing resources and lessons learned and figuring out what the unexpected challenges are.

So, we all wanted to share back with the community what we’ve learned so far, and what the next steps are for Oxfam as they strengthen institutional knowledge and understandings of responsible data across their various country offices.

We’re holding a webinar on Wednesday 19th April at 9am ET/2pm GMT (find your time here) to talk through our findings from this research, hear from Oxfam about how they feel the policy has been going, and share what we have learned so far from both sides. We’re hoping to also hear from other organisations who have been working on institutionalising responsible data practices and taking it from policy into practice.

The webinar is open to anyone to join, and details are below. If you’d like to have a slot to share about your work, let us know on research@theengineroom.org so we can plan the agenda accordingly – and there will also be space for Q & A after the short presentations.

Details on joining the call

We will be using an online conferencing service called UberConference. This service allows us to connect up to 100 participants using VOIP or phone. This is not a video conferencing system, so don’t worry about brushing your hair!

To join the discussion on UberConference, just follow these steps at the time of the meeting. We’ll collaboratively take notes on this publicly-available etherpad.

  1. Using Firefox or Chrome, go to https://www.uberconference.com/theengineroom.
  2. If you have trouble using your computer for audio, you can connect using your phone. The international dial-in numbers are listed here for over 50 countries.

For reference, here are UberConference’s System requirements. For help, visit the UberConference user guide, or the UberConference support portal.
